What are some best practices for managing a website?

The first real key in setting up your web site would really be to define the goals you wish to pursue with your website - is it informational, is it a marketing site, is it an e-commerce site.
Once you have this taken care of, you then need to determine what type of platform you want to use - an open source platform (maybe something as simple as Blogger), from scratch development (some personalized PHP or ASPX development), or a purchased COTS system.
Finally, once you have all that in mind, you can work on designing and filling the website with contents. All to often, people jump into their "website management" without first sitting down and articulating both the goals of the site and matching site goals with technology platform. This leads to a lot of trouble down the road as switching your business goals can mean switching technology, and switching technology is a huge undertaking in and of itself.
