With Enterprise Mobility becoming a major trend, there are security precautions that need to be taken. One of the biggest precautions would be to protect your business against vicious viruses that could not only cripple your business, but potentially ruin it beyond repair.
In order to highlight these threats, IT News Africa, in collaboration with Kaspersky Lab, have compiled a list of 10 vicious viruses that will ruin your company.
1. Zeus/SpyEye:
This Trojan has grown to become one of the most popular banking Trojans to date. It has been deigned to essentially steal an individuals banking details as well as record any keystrokes that a user may perform.

2. Zeus In The Mobile (ZITMO):
The mobile version of the Zeus Trojan. This Trojan infects mobile devices in order to to steal credentials, SMS, and Mobile transaction authorisation numbers (MTans).

3. Cryptolocker:
Cryptolocker is essentially ransomware that encrypts files on an infected system. Once the files have been encrypted, the user is then asked to pay a large sum of money in order to decrypt the files.

4. Koler/Police Ransomware:
Koler/Police Ransomware is another type of ransomware that locks infected systems and broadcasts a fake warning message from law enforcement entities. The ransonware informs users that the device has been used in order to conduct criminal activities. The user is then asked to pay a hefty price in order to unlock the device.

5. Svpeng:
Sypeng is a Mobile SMS-Trojan that spreads via SMS spam as well as compromised, legitimate sites, which are then forced to redirect mobile users to a malicious resources. This Trojan is capable of stealing SMS messages as well as information that is associated with voice calls and bank card information. The Trojan can additionally be used to steal money from the victim’s bank account.

6. Sality:
Sality is a polymorphic virus that spreads using removable media and local networks – it is a very popular virus especially in Middle East and Africa. Sality infects many executable files on the victim’s machine making it very difficult to be removed. It has many versions with many different capabilities like sending spam, collecting information, and executing DDOS attacks.

7. Dark Comet:

10 things you shouldn’t be doing with your device

We have all experienced it… One day your device works perfectly and the next you encounter issue upon issue. Maybe your smartphone’s touchscreen won’t respond to your delicate touch… or your PlayStation 4 won’t recognise the disk of a game that you constantly play. These things happen; however, we tend to get frustrated and on the rare occasion throw a device across the room.
This happens often and we generally regret abusing technology once all is said and done. Tech failing can be an irritant; however, further damaging or altering your device may result in the warranty being voided or result in further damage, which will essentially cost you a pretty penny as you will have to replace the device out of your own pocket.
Here is a brief guide on what you shouldn’t be doing with your device when it fails, or during general use.

1. Opening it
If a device is still under warranty never open it up in order to see what the issue is. Even if you are trained technician, you are better off sending the device back to where you purchased it from. Chances are they will swop it out for a new or refurbished unit.

2. Taking it to a side of the road repair shop
Chances are it has crossed your mind to take a quick stroll down the road to your local repair shop. However, while these shops are genuinely pretty decent, you may just lose your warranty. As stated above, always take your device back to where you purchased it from.

3. Pressing too hard on the screen
Every second smartphone either comes out as a full touchscreen device or as a device with both touch and manual input keys. While most phones work flawlessly when it comes to touch, unfortunately there are a few occasions where your device may not react to your golden touch. The best thing to do is to wipe your screen down as well as reset your device.
The worst thing to do is to tap and swipe vigorously and aggressively… because, chances are you may end up cracking or damaging the screen on your device.

4. Throwing, kicking or smashing a device
Whether it is a mobile phone, tablet device, gaming console or even a set-top box chances are you can recover the data that is stored on the internal storage device. These device are extremely sensitive and a hard enough knock may just potentially damage the storage device and other key components, which will ultimately result in the owner losing photographs, videos and other treasured data.

5. Taking it to the shower room
Most repair centres may charge you for water damage caused to a device. Whilst liquid is essentially a killer when it comes to electronic devices, steam can be too. Like a mass majority of the population, we all listen to music while showering; however, we tend to forget that steam created whilst showering is essentially water vapour. This vapour can often work its way into your devices and start causing irreparable damage.
If you are however insistent on listening to music whilst showering, there are ways to prevent your device from failing. You can either cover it with a towel, or even store it in the pocket of the pants you intend to wear. This will prevent the device from coming into contact with any form of liquid or vapour.

6. Charging it incorrectly
Over time the battery on your device tends to become weaker, this is natural as they were not entirely designed to last forever. While some owners get great life out there devices, others do not. This is due to the fact that we are so connected to our mobile devices that we tend to constantly have them on charge. In order to get the most out of your device it is generally beneficial to let your device’s battery deplete fully before charging it up once again.
When a battery fails it is best not to fiddle around with it. Additionally, you may try figure out ways to bring the battery to working capacity once again. While there are ways to do this, you are better off purchasing a new battery. Temporary fixes may cause the battery to explode as well as cause damage to the device itself.

7. Using unofficial software
You have had your device for quite a while; however, a friend mentions they can organise you free applications or games. A few months down the line your device’s software crashes and you are left with what is essentially a rather pricey, yet attractive, brick. Most applications are free today, but there are a few that need to be paid for. There is no reason to risk damaging your device by installing unofficial software on it in order to download apps for free. There are quite honestly thousands of apps on each app store that can be installed on a device at no charge.

8. Using unofficial hardware
These days you may find yourself paying a high price just to replace the power supply or different components for an electrical device. Chances are you may even settle for a cheaper generic version of the power supply or components that you need. While saving money is always a priority, unfortunately some devices don’t play well with unofficial products.
Devices are extremely sensitive and require the exact amount of power needed in order to function properly. Push too much power into a device and it may end up overloading it and the device will fail… push too little power into a device and it may end up malfunctioning as well. While official hardware can be pricey, you are better off using original products rather than risking damaging your device further.

9. Customising hardware
We all want unique looking devices; however, there is a slight risk. While customising your smartphone or console may not void your warranty the process of customising said item could. Always be sure to seal your device up before doing anything to it. A drop of paint could cause an electrical failure, which would technically be considered as water damage.

10. Alternative use
Consoles are made to play games just like smartphones are made to make calls. Granted these devices feature an array of software and hardware in order to do other things, but these are covered by your warranty. Alternative use would be using the device for something other than its intended purpose. For instance, using a device to hold a door open, or essentially using it to transmit illegal data.
Each device has been made to function in a specific way. Using it to perform anything other than what it is intended to do may result in your warranty being voided, or in extreme cases, criminal charges.
As an added extra, there is a major difference between waterproof and water resistant devices. Water resistant means it can resist different forms of liquid for a short period of time. Water proof means the device can withstand large amounts of water for longer periods of time. Always be sure to check that your device is either water proof or water resistant before showcasing this feature to your friends of work colleagues.

3G vs. 4G: What's the Difference?

3G vs. 4G: What's the Difference?

For average consumers, '3G' and '4G' are two of the most mysterious terms in the mobile technology dictionary, but they're used relentlessly to sell phones and tablets. If you're shopping for a new phone, the answer isn't clear-cut, and you shouldn't always go for the higher number. Our primer will help explain which technology to pick.

3G and 4G Explained
First things first, the "G" stands for a generation of mobile technology, installed in phones and on cellular networks. Each "G" generally requires you to get a new phone, and for networks to make expensive upgrades. The first two were analog cell phones (1G) and digital phones (2G). Then it got complicated.
Third-generation mobile networks, or 3G, came to the U.S. in 2003. With minimum consistent Internet speeds of 144Kbps, 3G was supposed to bring "mobile broadband." There are now so many varieties of 3G, though, that a "3G" connection can get you Internet speeds anywhere from 400Kbps to more than ten times that.
New generations usually bring new base technologies, more network capacity for more data per user, and the potential for better voice quality, too.

4G phones are supposed to be even faster, but that's not always the case. There are so many technologies called "4G," and so many ways to implement them, that the term is almost meaningless. The International Telecommunications Union, a standards body, tried to issue requirements to call a network 4G but they were ignored by carriers, and eventually the ITU backed down. 4G technologies include HSPA+ 21/42, WiMAX, and LTE (although some consider LTE the only true 4G of that bunch, and some people say none of them are fast enough to qualify.)

There are many different ways to implement LTE, too, so you can't assume all LTE speeds are the same. Carriers with more available radio spectrum for LTE can typically run faster networks than carriers with less spectrum, for instance.
This confusion is why we run our annual Fastest Mobile Networks story, which tests 3G and 4G networks in 30 cities nationwide. In this year's tests, we generally found that on speed alone AT&T's 4G LTE network was the fastest, followed by T-Mobile LTE, Verizon LTE, T-Mobile HSPA+, Sprint LTE, AT&T HSPA, Verizon 3G and finally Sprint 3G. As Sprint ramps up its faster "Spark" LTE network, we expect its LTE speeds to rise to competitive levels.
Would you like to know more about LTE, the global standard for 4G? Read our primer, What Is LTE? over at ExtremeTech.

When to Go For 4G
In 2013, almost everyone should have a 4G phone. Verizon now has nationwide 4G LTE coverage. T-Mobile and MetroPCS have nationwide HSPA+ 42 and growing LTE networks. AT&T has broad LTE coverage. Sprint is still building out LTE, but by next year the carrier aims to be comprehensive.
There's one thing to watch out for, though. Some carriers, such as FreedomPop, are still selling phones that run on Sprint's old WiMAX system. That system is deteriorating and will be turned off at the end of 2015. The new LTE system will only expand. So we recommend buying LTE devices from Sprint, not WiMAX devices. If possible, the devices should also support Sprint's new, faster "Spark" LTE system, not all of Sprint's LTE phones do.
If you like to surf the Web and especially stream video, 4G can be heaven. If you connect a laptop to your mobile link, 4G makes a huge difference. In general, anything involving transferring large amounts of data gets a big boost from 4G. Watch out for the data limits on your service plan, though; it's easy to use up a lot of data very quickly with 4G.
If you have a 3G phone and you've been frustrated with slow data, 4G may be the solution. 4G won't solve any dropped call problems, though, as all calls will be made over older networks until carriers switch to voice-over-LTE during the next few years.
Finally, if you want to future-proof yourself, get a 4G phone. 4G coverage is only going to get better, and that's where the carriers are spending most of their money right now. You can assume that all 4G phones also support your carrier's 3G and 2G networks as well.
Should You Even Consider 3G?
There are a few reasons you might still settle for a 3G phone.
If your phone is mostly for voice use, you have no need for 4G data. Save money and save battery life by choosing a device without the high-speed network.
If you live in an area that doesn't have 4G coverage, there's no advantage to a 4G phone. In fact, you'll have serious battery life problems if you buy an LTE phone and don't disable 4G LTE, as the radio's search for a non-existent signal will drain your battery quickly.
If you're strapped for cash and buying a phone off contract, you may have to settle for 3G to save money. In that case, make sure to get the fastest 3G phone possible. On Verizon and Sprint, you want to check that it supports "EVDO Rev A." On T-Mobile and AT&T, you want the highest class of HSPA+ possible: if not 42 or 21, then 14.4.

Internet Technology Curse and blessing of the 21st century

Internet has become a vital part of our lives over the recent years. This World Wide Web technology has turned the whole world into a global village. Back in early 1996 on a visit to Toronto Canada from Karachi Pakistan, my brother introduced me to internet technology for the first time. It was an absolute new invention and this magic just baffled me. Along with him I attended a seminar on information or internet Technology which was just in infancy and very few people knew about it. Every one including me was so curious to know and understand it. After getting a bit of knowhow, got a dial up connection at that time to use e-mails and stay in touch with my loved ones. I would leave my story here to proceed further with comments from a few people.
Information Technology has taken strides over these years. As with every new invention and technology it has its blessings and curses. Big huge size Computers transformed with thin sleek big monitors, from desk tops to laptops, from big laptops to small mini, thin and then to tablets. Apple corps invented iPad and every year a new iPad is coming in, this year its iPad air. The other companies too didn’t lag behind with Samsung and many more; they brought their own tablets in the great comparison of cyber world and market.
In smart phones the pioneer black berry is on the verge of bankruptcy. IPhone, Samsung, LG and others phones are just like small computer tablets, much in vogue and demand.
With these online contacts and cellular phones we all are closely connected to each other. Kids have got a lot many handy games and gadgets to play on and now with iPhone and all other smart phones there are a lot of games and apps to get on.
Sofia-- is a senior lady but a computer savoy. She started using it for almost 16 -17 years. She has a knack of reading and writing and found computer screen as a best tool for expression. She is associated with many online Islamic and literary groups. After the introduction of Urdu script on computers, she types a lot of stories in Urdu too and posts it to groups, newspapers and magazines. She sends her English articles to English Newspapers and magazines. She has a vast online circle .She attended many Online classes through Pal Talk, hot conference and webinar. She is excited with all these online tools and finds it a great source of knowledge and solace. Seeing her passion, she got two laptops as gifts from her sons. Last year she got an iPad 2, she enjoys its great speed and hi-tech approach on web surfing. She uses social media sites, Facebook, g+, twitter and Linked in. She has a regular cell phone, just for emergency contacts. She is connected through Skype with friends and family.
She gets annoyed some times when whole of her family members are busy on their laptops, cell phones and tablets, only getting together at dinner table for a short time.

Seerat, is a home maker, a part time employed from Oakville Canada. She is direly against all these modern and latest gadgets may be laptops, tablets, desk tops, smart phones and kids games. In her opinion through these, people have lost their family time, activities, talking and sharing to each other. Every one sitting around is holding one or the other gadget and busy in that. They are all linked into an unseen world, connected to their online friends, having fun, enjoying jokes on their own. Even in one house the family is connected through computers and phones. She herself doesn’t know much about computer use but still watches Pakistani, Indian dramas online on YouTube and other sources.
When doing nothing she sometime plays solitaire and benefits from Skype connecting to her son and his family in Malaysia. She has a regular cell phone for normal usage.
Sarah is a young lady, mother of four; right now she is a home staying mom or a home maker. Her kids ages are 10- 2.The oldest two go to school, while two young stay at home. She has a Samsung Galaxy cell phone with 3 G network. It’s called android system,it has all the apps like iPhone, free chat and call network, Google GPS system. She uses her phone most of the time for keeping in touch, checking e-mails, social media, camera and video. She has down loaded whole Quran through Quran explorer in the voice of Mishari Al Hafasi , listens Quran with on speakers while driving and enjoys it a lot.  In this way her kids can hear tilawat too and keep attached to Quran. Never been a big fan of music, she plays some kid’s poems. Her kids sometimes borrow her phone for games. They play a lot of hi-tech games Wii, Gameboy, Xbox, PlayStation and many more. Sometimes they play on her iPad.
With her busy schedule of, she hardly finds any time to sit on a computer. Over her phone she receives e-mails, go over Facebook and chat with her long distance friends and relatives.
Shehla is a high school student. She has a laptop and a cell phone. She uses laptop for her school work, homework, emailing and web surfing. She doesn’t have an internet data on her phone. It’s only used to make calls and texting. She keeps in touch with her family and friend and her parents keep a check on her when she is going to get off from her school and bus.
Zara is a grade 8th student. She is quite a bit computer savoy, got a kindle fire as a gift for her good grades. She downloaded many books because she is a prolific reader. She plays Nintendo Wii with her brothers over the weekends. She carries a normal cell phone for emergency contacts with her family and friends.
Omar is a University student he has an iPhone 5 with him, which he enjoys a lot. He is quite satisfied with its multiple apps and 4G networks. Keeping iPhone is sufficient for me to check my e-mails, Facebook update, and write down short notes. He uses it as a camera, movie recorder it’s free calling apps, through which he does free long distance video calls. Its GPS is pretty good.” I use a laptop and desk top for my assignments, presentations and other projects. I feel like these gadgets are a kind of blessing for us which has made my life and studies far easier.” He informed me.
Zakir is a student of grade 10. He is crazy after watching TV, playing WII or PlayStation. He has all the latest games and gadgets, which he bought through his pocket money. Earlier he had itouch and game boy. Now he got the old iPhone of his father and handed over those games to his younger brothers. He is always warned by his parents not to waste time and concentrate on his studies. He enjoys making videos and sometimes posts them on you tube. He took a photography course in his school for which he got a professional camera and tried many options of Photoshop. He works on desk top for his assignments and homework and sometimes borrows his father’s laptop .in his free time he mostly plays games on his iPhone.
Ainee and her friends watch a lot of anime on computer. She is a university student and has to study a lot. She got a lap top from university exclusively for university work, assignments, presentations etc. During holidays she is awake most of the night chatting with friends or playing some online games. Then she gets up quite late at night, her mom is quite annoyed on that. She has a regular cell phone for texting and Phone calls.
These are just a few examples which show how viral this trend of being online and using computers has gone. These are the blessings and curses of Modern day information Technology.
In this survey and with my observations I came to the conclusion that this technology has transformed our lives a lot. This internet technology is now a vital part of our lives. We have got so addicted to its usage now that we get frustrated when it is unavailable. Even in Pakistan most of the educated people are connected to Wi-Fi, social media, Whats app, twitter, chat rooms and e-mails. This e-mailing and chats have released the burden on postal mail and letters.  Now the message is send with the blink of an eye with internet. We are connected all around and to our far away loved ones.
Computers are now used by almost everyone, every day in the United States and Canada for various purposes. The whole world is now involved in this world wide web. This innovation has evolved and can accomplish anything from writing papers, to Facebook, to sending an email, or shopping online. This technology has significantly impacted the lives of many, but for better or worse? As we progress technologically, it is hard to tell when we go too far, and whether or not advances are positive or not.
Primarily, computers seem to be a helpful and ideal tool for everyday work. Invented in 1936, by Konrad Zuse, the computer has grown to a popular item used for adults and kids for work, school, and fun. This technology made it simple to communicate between co-workers to get work done more efficiently using email, and also has features such as soft wares to create documents, charts, and presentations. Using this system is a professional way to organize and present ideas in the work force. Laptops and desktops are used in schools as well as school boards see the value in furthering technology use. They can be used as tools for aid to teachers when they can’t always help every student. Now students can do own research and start to learn on their own. Advancements for computers have made school work easier as students can research using the internet as an almost infinite source of information. Not only are computers helpful in getting work done, but are used for personal enjoyment. These machines allow access to games, online shopping, social networking, and the opportunity to explore the world all from your own seat. More uses of computers are the serious aspects they help. Military often rely on the use of communication and technology of computers for safety. Computers also help bring the news back to us as we can watch on our own screens. Computers could be saving lives. Plus, computers save paper; computers save trees.

The bad influence or the curse of this technology is that it has stolen many lovely moments of a family life. Those moments gradually changed, first with the advent of TV, then internet. Today in a cartoon, a couple is sitting across each other, the boy is looking to his phone and the girl says, let me tie this phone to my forehead just to pretend that you are looking at me. It used to be a very bad manner not to get involved or focused to the conversation in a group. Now even the mature, grownups, responsible would hear a chime of their phone, pull it out and start texting or reading the message in the middle of a discussion. Many of them would start playing solitaire or other games to avoid boredom of the conversation. The US senators in the senate were once photographed, playing on their computers in a session. Participants are asked to turn off their cell phone in an important meeting to avoid distraction.
What to say about kids, who sneak in to get their parents phone to avoid boredom and the parents wish them to be busy too. Actually these smart phones have drastically changed the scenario with the handy computers and data connections. In North America in a normal house hold almost everyone has a laptop and most have smart phones. It’s a normal scene to watch every one holding it and busy with their gadget while sitting together.
The main concerns as we all know and I had repeatedly mentioned in my previous articles is to be aware of what one is doing on internet. There should be always this sense and caution that Allah swt, the all knower is watching us all the time and two angles kiraman katibin are recording each and every detail. There are always two aspects or sides of everything and so is with this technology. The young generation or kids should be watched what they are doing on internet. There is a lot of bad, ugly, vulgar and indecent stuff going on there. There are predators, pornographers and a lot of inappropriate sites which could devastate young, teen and even adult minds. It is a great responsibility of parents to be watchful.
To determine whether this technology is a blessing or a curse is one of the hardest decisions one can make. This has generated a big controversy, leading into the creation of two different positions and views: supporters and opponents.
From the supporters’ point of view, technology improves our quality of life. Some of the most important discoveries we have done would not have been possible without the usage of this technology. Things like the internet have definitely changed the perspective we had of distances. Now we can just connect to the World Wide Web and communicate with people who are miles away from us. This is only one of the many examples we could give to prove the fact that technology is a blessing and that our life would not be the same without it.

In my opinion, technology is neither a blessing nor a curse; it’s both. What makes it change its position is how we use it. We can’t blame a nuclear weapon for the damage it produces; we blame the person who detonated it. It’s the same with everything else, computers, medicines, cars, planes, TV, movies … and even with every day’s simple things. What should remain in our conscience is if what we do with it will either bless or curse us and our own life.

Thanks & Regards,

WHAT IS WINDOWS 9?

AFTER WINDOWS 8 BUT BEFORE WINDOWS 9?

Apparently Microsoft will be creating an interim release or two before Windows 9. It has been speculated that Microsoft will be releasing a Windows 8.1 update 2 and maybe even a Windows 8.1 update 3 before Windows 9 is released.
There is speculation that these updates would offer further refinements to Windows 8.1 including the addition/refinement of a start button. The idea here would be to appeal to consumers and businesses with more features before Windows 9 is released.

WHAT IS “THRESHOLD”?

Threshold is the rumored codename for the next major version of Windows. Though Threshold is widely believed to be the same as Windows 9, apparently it is not.
Instead, the codename refers to the wave of operating systems across Windows-based phones, devices and gaming consoles.
Allegedly, Threshold will include updates to all three OS platforms (Xbox One, Windows and Windows Phone) that will allow them to share common elements.
So more properly put, Windows 9 will be part of the threshold updates.

WHAT IS WINDOWS 9?

Windows 9 is the speculated product name for the next major Operating System from Microsoft. If confirmed, the name would be a continuation of the numeric names given to the various versions of Windows since the very beginning.
Keep in mind that as always, those names are subject to change by Microsoft right up until the actual software is made available for sale.

WHEN IS WINDOWS 9 GOING TO BE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC?

The rumor mill has April 2015 as a date when Microsoft might release this Operating System to the public.
In January 2014, Microsoft analyst and blogger Paul Thurrott  said he believes the company plans to release Windows 9 (codenamed Threshold) in April 2015, less than three years after Windows 8.
Also, Microsoft leaker FaiKee released documents claimed to be Redmond’s full roadmap for Windows 9 and other products. The first of which, released to the My Digital Life forums, says “Windows 9 Windows Preview Release @ 2015 02-03.”
Another leak was by Myce.com, and is a bit more vague but said to expect a preview release between Q2 and Q3 2015. This would make a September 2015 release date a possibility.

HOW MUCH WILL WINDOWS 9 COST?

As usual, the rumor mill is all over the place on this one but there is some speculation that at least some versions of Windows 9 will be available as a free system update. Microsoft has come under tremendous pressure from Apple which releases it’s OS upgrades at no cost.
There are rumors of a barebones version of Windows 9 which will be available for free. This version would allow users to “unlock” new chunks of functionality for a price. Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet has speculated that the opposite might be true.
Here theory: different SKUs of Windows might be offered for free or at very low prices to OEMs and consumers, but desktop version will not be free.

HOW MANY VERSIONS OR SKU’S OF WINDOWS 9 WILL BE RELEASED?

Yet another unknown. Some have speculated that as few as three versions of Windows 9 could be released. Others have said there could be a lot more.
Mary Jo Foley did state the following about the various versions.
Users running Threshold on a desktop/laptop will get a SKU, or version, that puts the Windows Desktop (for running Win32/legacy apps) front and center. Two-in-one devices, like the Lenovo Yoga or Surface Pro, will support switching between the Metro-Style mode and the Windowed mode, based on whether or not keyboards are connected or disconnected.
The combined Phone/Tablet SKU of Threshold won’t have a Desktop environment at all, but still will support apps running side-by-side, my sources are reconfirming. This “Threshold Mobile” SKU will work on ARM-based Lumia phones, ARM-based Windows tablets and, I believe, Intel-Atom-based tablets.

WILL WINDOWS 9 MEAN THE DESKTOP WILL FINALLY GO AWAY?

I am 100% confident in saying that the desktop is not going anywhere. It may mature and evolve but I am pretty sure it will be here for a while. Microsoft is still processing the tremendous backlash that Windows 8 brought, especially with businesses.
The odds of Microsoft attempting to rock the boat with a major blow like killing off the desktop are slim to none. The company is striving to keep Windows 9 drama free.

WILL WINDOWS 9 ALLOW DEVELOPERS TO WRITE CODE ONCE AND DEPLOY ACROSS PHONES, TABLETS AND PC’S?

That certainly seems to be a future objective for Redmond but I am not sure that it will be done by next year. Windows 9 will have made several strides towards unifying the Microsoft ecosystem and making it easier for developers to write less code for more platforms.
There is also speculation that Windows 9 will auto detect your hardware and deliver the experience appropriate for your device (mobile UI for phones and tablets). See the Mary Jo Foley quote above for more details.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHANGES THAT ARE RUMORED TO BE COMING WITH WINDOWS 9?

This is where the internet goes a little crazy. Here are some of the rumored changes Windows 9 is bringing:

THE BLENDING OF THE DESKTOP AND THE MODERN UI

Apparently, Microsoft are planning to further merge the Desktop and Modern UI. Simply put, Microsoft will allow Modern UI apps to run in the desktop, in windowed mode, and have Modern UI apps pinned to the Start Menu instead of a Start Screen.
Some of this work has begun with Windows 8.1 and may continue with subsequent updates before Windows 9.

A NEW/REFINED START BUTTON

The controversy over the disappearance of the start button was a big part of the furor and uproar over Windows 8. There is speculation that Microsoft will bring it back in the desktop versions of Windows 9, more refined and better.

RADICALLY REDESIGNED UI

I doubt that 100%. Windows 9 is the gentle unwinding of Windows 8, emphasis on the word gentle. Microsoft will be looking to do very little harm with this upgrade. I believe there will be subtle changes but nothing aggressive.

DEEPER INTEGRATION WITH BING

I believe this will be true. Microsoft continues to go all in with Bing and I think Windows 9 will be no exception. There will be many opportunities in the next version of Windows for Microsoft to integrate search into the Operating System.

DEEPER INTEGRATION WITH AZURE FOR CLOUD STORAGE

I believe that Microsoft will continue the push to leverage Azure for cloud storage. Microsoft may actually integrate parts of the Operating System into the cloud for document/file storage.

IMPROVED POWER MANAGEMENT

This is expected. Microsoft has done a great job with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 with power management. Expect Microsoft to make the OS even more efficient in the next version of Windows.

DEEPER KINECT/GESTURE INTEGRATION

It makes sense that Microsoft may try and push the envelope with gesture recognition in Windows 9. I would expect that the company would push beyond the initial forays made in Windows 8.1 (specifically the Cooking application). Gesture based computing would be huge if they could pull it off.

BETTER SECURITY

I fully expect better security options in Windows 9 including fingerprint recognition. Microsoft do a great job with security and continue to lock down Windows with every major release.

64 BIT ONLY?

This is the enduring urban legend. For the past 6 years, we have speculated that Microsoft would move to 64 bit exclusively. I doubt that will happen in this release. Once again, this is not going to be a controversial release, this will be as smooth and drama free as possible. At least that is what Microsoft have to be hoping.
That’s all I have right now but I will continue to update this page as we know more.
