Top 10 Tips to protect yourself against computer viruses

When your computer gets infected with a virus it can be a devastating experience and this is exactly why you need to protect your computer from viruses. A virus can consume your precious computer files and even damage your computer hardware. Is this worth ignoring? I don’t think so! Even sites like www.lifelock.com will tell you the same. Anything you can do when protecting your computer from viruses has to be a good thing and is well worth spending your time on. We all know prevention is better than a cure so I am going to share my top 10 tips on how to protect your computer from viruses.

10 tips to protect your computer from viruses

There are many ways to protect your computer from nasty viruses invading. Protecting your computer is an number one concern for every computer user on earth. I do not know anyone that wants to have their computer crash due to a virus invasion. Here are 10 ways to protect your computer and keep your files and data safe.

1. Learn about viruses

The first thing that I recommend is to research and become knowledgeable about viruses. How can you protect your computer from viruses if you don’t even know what they are. Here are some previous tutorials I have written about viruses. See What is a Virus and how do I know if I have one? and What is the difference between a virus, spyware, Malware, and adware? How can you protect your computer from viruses if you don’t know what it is?

2. Arm yourself with the best Anti-virus software to suit your needs.protect your computer from viruses

Not everyone can get away with using free Anti-virus software because it depends what you do on your computer. It depends on factors such as if you download files or not, if you open email attachments, and if you surf suspicious websites. See my reviews for the best Virus Removal Software. Lets face it, if you do not have protection against viruses installed on your computer, you will without a doubt, get a virus within the first hour of surfing the internet. It is that easy. For years I would remove a virus from my dads computer at least once a year, until finally I realized that he needed a paid Anti-virus program. He wasn’t good with computers and if a windows popped up and said he needed to take a scan, he would just do it. He would just presume it was the program I had installed to protect his computer. Now I have Avast on his computer and there has not been one problem since. I bought the Internet security version so it has full protection. It never asks him to do anything and just works in the background.

3. Regular Updates

Having a great Anti-virus program installed on your computer to protect your computer from viruses is great, however if you do not regularly update the virus definitions, then the program is useless. New viruses are produced daily and this is why we constantly have to update the viruses definitions and stay ahead of the bad guys. Avast Internet Security simply updates by itself and just tells me when it is done.

4. Downloading

When surfing the internet avoid websites that contain illegal software downloads, sexual references, free screensavers, cracks or serials, etc. I am sure you get the picture. If you go near these sites you are immediately asking for trouble. Some other websites that you should stay away from include foreign websites where you cannot understand the language on them. This is because you cannot tell what is on the website.

5. Windows Updates

Always update Windows when protecting your computer. These updates contain security updates that will help in your fight against viruses. If you do not perform regular Windows updates you are leaving your computer in a vulnerable state. You can simple check to see if your computer needs updates by going to he start menu and typing in “windows update”. See the screen shot below. You can also view recent Windows update history so you can be in control of the whole situation.
tips to protect your computer from viruses

6. Opening Emails

Be careful when opening emails. There are obvious emails that you know you shouldn’t open, however what about the ones you get from people you know? What if your friend has a virus and it is spreading itself through emails? An email cannot be important enough to risk getting a virus. Delete the email and send a fresh email to your friend asking them if they actually did send you the email. It is better to be safe than sorry. :(
You can also create a whitelist so only certain emails get through. You will still have to be careful though, as you do not know what security the sender has installed on their computer. It’s like driving on the road, you need to watch how others are driving to stay safe.

7. Change your settings to protect your computer from viruses

If you are really serious about protecting your computer you can change your email settings and receive text emails only. You can also disable the ability to open email attachments. Virus travel in HTML enabled emails and file attachments. They cannot travel in text email messages. I know this sounds very boring, however, I would rather be boring and protect my computer from viruses.

8. Peer to Peer file sharing – ways to protect your computer

Do not use peer to peer (p2p) file sharing programs. These include programs such as Limewire, Bearshare, Gnutella, Morpheus, Torrents, etc. These program let you download files from other computer users connected to their program network. You have no way of knowing what you are actually downloading until it is on your computer. Even if you share files from a cd from a friend, it may have a virus. Protecting your computer from viruses is the most important priority for you and you do not want to risk your computer safety just because you trust your friend.

9. Do not download files from websites

Again, there is no way of knowing what you are downloading. The file can appear to be named like the file you want, however it could be anything. Most of the time, this is how a virus is unleashed, it usually seems like a harmless, familiar object. If you are looking for a driver for a certain brand of computer then make sure you are getting the download from the genuine website. Many websites on the Internet offer free driver downloads, however, many of them contain viruses. Everything is not what it seems, so be very careful.

10. Have Firewall Protection

Make sure you have a firewall enabled on your computer. Windows comes with an inbuilt firewall or you can use a third party firewall program like Zone Alarm. Either way, make sure the firewall is on…To check the Windows Firewall go to the security settings in your control panel.
If you are careful and are serious about learning how to protect your computer from viruses, it is possible to stay safe. My top 10 tips will help you keep your computer running smoothly, and virus free.

Notes on tips to protect your computer from viruses:

  • These 10 ways to protect your computer from viruses are extremely important tips to follow. If you have had a virus in the past you would know how devastating it is when you lose all of your files and your computer crashes.
  • People often try to install more than one anti-virus program to protect their computers from viruses. This is not how to protect your computer from viruses as installing more than one program always causes a problem. You can only install one virus removal program at any one time.

Top 10 Tasks For The Ultimate Computer Maintenance

If Benjamin Franklin had a computer, he’d probably say, “A minute of computer maintenance is worth an hour of computer repair.” It’s true—occasional computer maintenance will save you considerable time and money down the line. We have many computer maintenance tips and even a computer maintenance checklist, however these tips are about entire computer maintenance, not just the internal files system.

Here are the top 10 computer maintenance tasks everyone should perform:

Computer Maintenance Task #1: Scan For Viruses

Your virus scanner tries to catch viruses before they infect your computer, but the people who make anti-virus software can’t detect viruses until the viruses infect somebody’s computer—so even the most secure computer in the world is vulnerable.
The people who make anti-virus software know this, so they give your anti-virus software the ability to scan your disk drive for virus infections. Get in the habit of running a “Full Disk Scan” every month (or more frequently if you use your computer to manage important information or financial accounts).
Also run a full-disk scan if your computer starts acting strangely. Many viruses try to hide themselves in legitimate programs, causing strange behavior. Only a full-disk scan can detect these viruses.

Computer Maintenance Task #2: Clean Your Registry

Programs store important information in the Windows Registry—information like their license key or how many days your free trial has left. But when you remove programs from your computer, this information often gets left behind. That leaves you with a registry full of useless information.
Since almost every program on your computer uses the registry dozens or hundreds of times a day, purging your registry of unneeded information can speed up how fast applications load. It can also help prevent old registry entries from interfering with newer registry entries and the programs that use them.
A quick search on Google for “Registry Cleaner” turns up several registry cleaner programs for every budget. Run one of these programs once a month or once a quarter as part of your regular computer maintenance. Mitz has been testing PC Speed Doctor for over a year and hasn’t had any registry related computer problems at all.

Computer Maintenance Task #3: Create a “Disk Box”

Back when everything—including Windows—came on floppy disks, I created a disk box to store all of my program and driver disks. Keeping everything together saved me from tearing the house apart looking for a lost disk when something went wrong.
Today my “disk box” is really an old CD-R spindle that holds all of my driver and software CD-ROMs. It takes up almost no space, and I haven’t touched the CDs on the bottom of the spindle in years, but I still use it frequently to find some elusive driver or program that can’t be downloaded from the Internet.
If you ever get in trouble on your computer, you don’t want to have to search all over for your old discs. Start keeping a “disk box” today so everything you need is in one place.
Computer Maintenance

Computer Maintenance Task #4: Clear Out Dust

It amazes me how many people who can’t stand three days of dust on their furniture will never even think of clearing out the dust from their computer. With their vents and fans, computers are practically designed to be dust traps—but dust is really bad for computers.
Dust is a highly effective insulator, so it traps heat inside your computer. That heat makes metal and other parts on your computer expand, causing wear and tear on the moving parts—like the tiny ball bearings inside your disk drive. The heat also prevents electrical parts from working the way they were designed.
Cleaning the dust out of your computer is easy, if a bit tedious. Buy a can of compressed air from your local supermarket or office supply store, turn off your computer, open your computer case, cover your eyes and mouth, and spray until all the dust is gone. I suggest you “dust out” your computer once a year, or twice a year if someone in your house smokes.

Computer Maintenance Task #5: Defragment

Imagine you had only five minutes to clean your house before guests arrived. You’d probably do a few quick “hacks” that weren’t really cleaning—like throwing junk into the closet and sweeping dust under the rug. Windows does the same thing every time you save a file—in order to save the file quickly, it doesn’t pay close attention to putting it on the disk drive in a nice, neat way.
That’s why you should defragment your disk drive about once a month. This is one of the easiest computer maintenance tasks on this list: simply start the Defragmentation program from the Windows Control Panel before you go to bed one night and you’ll have a well-ordered disk drive when you wake up the next morning.

Computer Maintenance Task #6: Get S.M.A.R.T.

The Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) checks your disk drive for wear and tear so that it can warn you before your disk drive fails. Not only can this tell you when you need to buy a new disk drive, but it can let you know that you need to make a through backup before it’s too late.
There are numerous programs on the Web which will help you read and interpret S.M.A.R.T. data—just search Google for “S.M.A.R.T. drive test”.

Computer Maintenance Task #7: Trash Duplicate Files

I frequently forget to delete photos from my camera before I take new photos, so when I download the new photos to my computer, the camera also creates duplicate copies of the old photos. Other processes on your computer also create duplicate files, and all of these duplicate files waste your disk space.
Removing duplicate files is another easy computer maintenance task. Search Google for software to “remove duplicate files”. Almost all of this software works the same way: it reads every file on your computer and compares a mathematical representation of each file (called a checksum) to every other file on your computer. The process takes time, but it’s highly accurate, and every duplicate file remover will let you choose which files to remove.
There are some programs that will perform computer maintenance, clean your registry, and remove duplicate files. Captain Optimizer is one example.

Computer Maintenance Task #8: Install Upgrades

Most of the fastest-spreading viruses exploit a flaw in a specific program, whether it’s Windows or an application. The programmers who write these programs usually issue a “patch” for these security flaws as soon as they discover them.top 10 computer tips
Programmers even issue patches for flaws that haven’t been exploited by viruses yet, so installing the latest patches can help protect your computer and your personal data.
How do you install these security patches? Simply install the upgrades for the programs on your computer. Most important are the programs on your computer that access the Internet or that you use to open files from the Internet. For example: Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice, and all multi-player games.
Most programs have an option in Tools or Help to check for updates. I suggest you run the “Check For Updates” option once a month or more frequently as part of your regular computer maintenance.

Computer Maintenance Task #9: Remove Startup Programs

Most new computers startup in 20 to 40 seconds. Most computers over a year old can take 2 minutes or more to startup. What changed? It’s the startup programs.
Many programs today install a startup program that will either make it easier to start the main program by putting an icon in your taskbar or will make the main program start faster by “pre-loading” it. Unfortunately, both of these things mean that your computer will boot up much more slowly. For laptops in particular this can be quite annoying.
In less time than it takes for your computer to boot, you can disable these pesky and unnecessary startup programs. See our previous article for instructions on how to disable startup programs.

Computer Maintenance Task #10: Make A Backup

A backup isn’t strictly part of computer maintenance. It won’t help your computer work better or live longer, but it will absolutely help you survive computer failure with the minimum level of stress.
We’ve written about backups extensively before, so I won’t belabor the point. Please make a backup at least once a month—although more frequently is recommended. See our articles about making easy secure backups for great backup options that won’t even prolong your normal computer maintenance.

Top 10 Common Computer Troubleshooting Tips

Most computer troubleshooting means applying one of the 10 following tips to a difficult situation until your find the problem. Once you identify the problem, the solution is rarely further away than a quick Google search or a trip to your local computer parts store.

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #1: Reboot The Computer

If you call up the tech support at your company, the first thing they’ll tell you to do is reboot your computer. Rebooting a computer almost never fixes the underlying problem, but it can quickly make your computer usable again (and get you off the tech support line), so tech support personal love this tip. You might have a computer black screen and they will still tell you to reboot your computer.

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #2: Run A Full-Disk Virus Scan

One way viruses try to hide from virus removal software is by hiding themselves inside Microsoft Windows or inside other programs on your computer, so when Windows or a program starts to act strangely, you should check to see if you have a virus. A full-disk virus scan will take a while, so start the scan before you head out to lunch.

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #3: Use A POST Card

Every PC (and Intel Macintosh) performs a Power-On Self-Test (POST) check when it boots. As the computer checks each of its components, it sends a code to the PCI port on your motherboard. A cheap POST-code checker can show you what’s going on even if your computer doesn’t boot completely so that you can run a quick Google search to find out which part in your computer has failed.
For more information, see our previous article about POST code detection.HOTER Mini PCI-E Express & PCI PC Diagnostic Post Card Tester

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #4: Minimal Reproduction

If you keep having the same problem, then simple band-aids like rebooting the computer aren’t the best solution. You need to fix the problem for real, so use the same technique real system administrators and programmers use to find the root cause of the problem. The technique is called “minimal steps to reproduce.”
First, figure out how to consistently cause the problem. If your computer keeps freezing, figure out that it always freezes immediately after you save a file and remove your USB drive.
Next, try reducing the number of steps to reproduce the problem. Following our previous example, see if the computer freezes when you remove your USB drive even if you haven’t saved a file.
Keep trying to reduce the number of steps to reproduce the problem. When you find the minimal set of steps, you’ll know exactly what causes the problem and you can do a quick search on Google to see who else has had the same problem and what they did to fix it. Or you can take the problem to the people who wrote the software or built the hardware and ask them to fix it for you.
Computer Troubleshooting

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #5: Sleep On It

Most people hate this advice. When they’re having a problem, they want it fixed now. That’s natural, but trust me—if you wait to fix the problem, the answer will usually come to you much quicker and with much less frustration than if you keep working at all night long. And sometimes, if you wait, the problem will fix itself.

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #6: Create A New Account

Most programs on your computer have two sets of settings. One set is global—it’s shared between all of the users on your computer. The other set is local—it applies to each user individually. If you think these local settings might be the problem, try creating a new user account and then run your software.
If the software runs correctly on the new user account, then you can copy the new user’s settings file over your old user’s settings file so that the program will work on your old user account.

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #7: Reinstall

This is a little bit like rebooting, but it can provide a real long-term fix. Go into the Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs wizard from the Windows Control Panel and remove the program (or programs) that are causing problems. Then install them again and see if that fixes your problem.
If the programs access important data, I highly recommend you make a full system backup before you uninstall the programs. (See our articles about easy and cheap backups for more information.)

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #8: Run A Registry Cleaner

I have to confess—I’ve never run a registry cleaner on my own computer. That’s because I’m very selective about what software I install. But it can be very useful to run a registry cleaner on a computer used to install random software from the Internet. Old and poorly-written programs can leave all sorts of problems in your Windows Registry that will affect the programs you run.
And, even if the registry cleaner doesn’t fix your problem, it may provide some other benefits—like making Windows boot faster when you turn your computer on in the morning.
A quick search of Google turns up dozens of registry cleaner programs available for immediate Internet download.

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #9: Re-seat Hardware

Many computers today are loaded down with removable peripherals—from your graphics card to your disk drive to all of your USB devices, most things can be easily removed.
But devices that can be easily removed can also slide out accidentally. A device that isn’t making full contact with your computer’s connectors will often fail in weird ways. Your disk drive may open some files and not others; your graphics card may display lines when it gets hot but not when it’s still cool; your USB scanner may reset randomly in the middle of a scan.
All you have to do is pull out the troublesome device or cord and then put it back in. For USB devices this couldn’t be easier. For hardware inside your computer case, it can be a bit more annoying—but anything that can fix your problems quickly is worth trying.

Computer Troubleshooting Tip #10: Check Your Computer Memory (RAM)

If none of the tips above fixed your problem, it’s time to look at computing’s biggest bogeyman—computer memory. In the olden days, computer memory (RAM) was highly unreliable, so it came with a “parity check” which would detect errors every time you used your computer memory, but for cost and speed reasons, RAM manufacturers no longer include parity on most consumer RAM.
That means that when your RAM goes bad, there’s nothing your computer can do but accept bad data. That bad data prevents programs from running the way the programmers programmed them, which can cause all sorts of weird and seemingly unrelated problems.
The solution is simple: check your RAM. I highly recommend using the free memory checker available at MemTest86.com. The longer it runs, the better the chance it will detect bad RAM, so I suggest you start it before you go to bed and check the results in the morning when you wake up.

Top 10 Computer Problems That New Computer Users Will Face

New computer users face many computer problems that experienced users know how to handle. These problems can be easily overcome and, once you figure them out, they’ll never bother you again.

It is a great feeling once you have solved one of those difficult computer problems. It almost makes you feel like an IT professional.

Computer Problems #1: Plugging In The Computer Parts

The first computer problem every new user faces is not buying a new computer, but plugging it in when they get it home. Although computer makers have made things easier in recent years by color coding many wires and plugs, putting everything in the right place still remains a challenge.
A special problem exists for users who receive their computers in several different packages. Do you need to wait for all of your computer parts to arrive before trying to turn on your computer? (The answer is probably not.)
To setup your computer, perform the following steps:
  1. Find the power cord. If you bought a computer made for your country, you’ll be able to identify it by its power plug. On the computer side of the plug should be three slits; plug this into the back of the computer where three prongs stick out.
  2. Most keyboards and mice today use USB plugs. Look on the back of your computer for a trident-like symbol with three curvy spokes. Gently try to insert the wire from your keyboard and mouse into this; if it doesn’t go in, flip it over and try inserting it the other side up.
  3. Monitors these days use all sorts of connections—VGA, DVI, Mini-DVI, DisplayPort, and others. Find the corresponding plug and gently insert the monitor cord. Be careful—I once ruined a VGA video card by plugging in a monitor cord upside down. You also need to plug in the monitor’s power cord—they usually look just like the power cord for your computer.
To test whether your computer boots, you only need the computer and its power cord. To see if it works correctly, you need only the computer, the monitor, and both power cords. You can use the computer very basically with just the keyboard (or, to a less degree, just the mouse). So if your computer comes in different packages, you don’t have to wait for everything to arrive.
Computer Problems

Computer Problems #2: Shut Down The Computer Correctly

This is important: you do not want to shut down the computer by pressing the power button. Shutting down the computer with the power button can wipe out unsaved files and may damage your computer’s file system. Many of the most common computer problems are caused by incorrectly shutting down your computer.
I know that this advice runs counter to how you power off every other electronic device you’ve ever used, but it’s how computers were designed. To shutdown correctly, open the Windows Start menu, click the Turn Off button, and choose Shutdown from the menu that appears.

Computer Problems #3: Whether Or Not To Report A Problem

If a program on your computer crashes, Windows will ask whether you want to report a bug. Before you click yes, think about whether you were doing anything private before the crash.
Windows sends information about what the program was doing along with its crash report. That means that if your accounting program crashed, your personal financial data could be transmitted to the techs at Microsoft. Other programs hold other private data.
I have no reason to suspect the techs at Microsoft are bad people who will misuse your data, but you still may want to avoid sending them your personal information.

Computer Problems #4: Text Too Small

I don’t know about you, but as I get older, I find I prefer larger text more and more. (I love increasing the font size on my e-book reader to the max.) A lot of computers today come set to their max screen resolution, which can be awfully small if you have even a normal-sized computer monitor.
You can quickly increase the size of everything on your computer—not just the text—by decreasing the display resolution. Open the Windows Control Panel and start the Appearance and Personalization wizard. Choose the Display Settings tab and adjust the slider in the Resolution section toward the left. Click apply. Your monitor will flash, the setting will change, and a box will appear asking if you want to keep the new settings. Keep trying until you find a setting you like.

Computer Problems #5: Lost Files

If you can’t find a file, picture, or movie you saved before, use the Windows Find tool. In Windows 7, there’s a Find bar on the Windows Start Menu. In Windows XP, there’s an option on the Start Menu to Find Files & Folders.
Whichever option you use, the easiest way to find a file is to type in part of the file name and press the Search button. You don’t need to type in the whole filename.
When the results appear, they will tell you where your file is so you can find it later. You can also view or edit it by double-clicking on it in the search results. Of course it is even easier to find files if you keep files organized the right way.

Computer Problems #6: Connecting The Internet

Chances are you didn’t buy a computer just to type and print documents—you probably bought it mainly to use the Internet.
Connecting a single computer to the Internet is usually easy. If you’re using a telephone modem, plug your telephone cord into your computer and install the software you got from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
If you’re using DSL or fiber optic, someone from the telephone company will need to set it up for you.
Cable users can usually set up the modem on their own: install the splitter onto a cable outlet and plug your TV cord into one connector and your cable modem into the other connector. Then plug in your cable modem and install the software you got from your cable company.

Computer Problems #7: No Sound

For some reason, many computers come with the volume muted, so it seems like the sound isn’t working at first. This is one of the easiest computer problems to fix: look at the task bar in the bottom right corner of the screen and find the icon that looks like a conical speaker. Left click it once and drag the volume up. If the Mute checkbox is checked, click it once to uncheck it.
After you increase your volume, try playing a song or video again.
In Windows you will see a sound icon in the notification area on your taskbar. This will be located next to the time and date and when you press on this the volume and the mute button appear. If the sound is muted, all you have to do is read press the button and it will bring the sound back.

Computer Problems #8: Cancelling A Print Job

This happens to all of us eventually: we accidentally print a document with 100 pages or more (or we accidentally print 100 copies of the same document).
To print the whole thing would waste an extraordinary amount of paper and ink, so what can you do to cancel the print job? Unfortunately the first option most people try is turning off the printer—but that doesn’t usually work. Windows wants to help you, so it continues printing when you turn the printer back on.
There are two ways to cancel most print jobs: one way is on the printer, the other way is on Windows.
Stopping the print job on the printer is the slower way, but it will probably save you the most paper and ink. Look for an orange button (or a button with an orange light) and press it once. This is usually the cancel button. Your printer should stop printing almost immediately (although it will take a moment to spit out the current page). But your printer still needs to receive all of the remaining data from Windows, so you won’t be able to print anything else for several minutes.
On Windows, you can stop the print job in the Printer Job Manager. Look at the tray in the bottom right corner of your screen for an icon that looks like a printer. Double click that icon; it will bring up a list of your current print jobs. Right-click on each job you want to cancel and click Stop Job. It will take a moment for the printing to stop on the printer, but you can print something new almost immediately.

Computer Problems #9: Mouse Moves Too Quickly (Or Slowly)

I find that older people tend to feel that the mouse moves too quickly, while younger people think it moves too slowly. I suppose that says something about the human condition, but when it comes to computers, mouse speed settings can be adjusted.
Open the Windows Control Panel from the Start menu and open the Keyboard and Mice wizard. On the Pointer Options tab there’s an slider that changes how fast the mouse pointer moves. Adjust it, click Apply, and give the mouse a try. Repeat until you find a setting comfortable for you.

Computer Problems #10: Where To Turn For Help

Not knowing how to fix important computer problems is similar to being stranded on the side of an abandoned road without a cell phone. These four tips should help you fix most computer problems not covered in this article:
  1. Search www.Google.com for your problem. Try to describe the problem in 4 to 10 words using plain English.
  2. Call tech support if it’s included with your computer. You may have to wait on hold for a while, but most tech support companies aren’t as bad as people make them out to be.
  3. Ask your friends—even if they aren’t geeks. The most common computer problems are just that—common problems. Other people will have encountered them, and they’ll be able to help you find the solution.
  4. Ask us here in the Tips4PC fourm. Geeks like us tend forget about the computer problems that stymied us when we were new users.
