Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper For Cleaning Malware Infected PC's Even When Unbootable

Malware infections can sometimes block anti-malware utilities or even make the computer unbootable, Microsoft has now came up with a free "Standalone System Sweeper" utility enabling users to get rid of those nasty infections allowing them to perform offline scans to remove viruses, trojans and rootkits effectively.
Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper allows users to download latest definitions and make a bootable CD, DVD, or USB stick which when booted from loads the Windows Preinstall Environment (Windows PE) to run the scan and clean infections.

Chinese Hackers Targeted U.S. Officials in Gmail Phishing Attack

Google has revealed that U.S. government officials and Chinese activists were the targets of a recent Gmail phishing attack that originated from China.
“Through the strength of our cloud-based security and abuse detection systems, we recently uncovered a campaign to collect user passwords, likely through phishing,” Google engineering director Eric Grosse said on the company’s blog. “This campaign, which appears to originate from Jinan, China, affected what seem to be the personal Gmail accounts of hundreds of users including, among others, senior U.S. government officials, Chinese political activists, officials in several Asian countries (predominantly South Korea), military personnel and journalists.”
Google said that the attack was focused on monitoring the content of the targeted users by secretly forwarding emails from compromised accounts. The attack is reminiscent of last year’s famous Google security breach instigated by Chinese hackers.
“Google detected and has disrupted this campaign to take users’ passwords and monitor their emails,” Grosse added. “We have notified victims and secured their accounts.” The search giant is now encouraging users to activate a two-step verification process to prevent unauthorized access from new computers.
This is at least the second attack targeting Google accounts by Chinese hackers. The first time it occurred, Google nearly pulled out of China and caused a firestorm of controversy by refusing to censor its search engine. This time, Google tried to bury the lede and not turn this into another Google vs. China fiasco. Perhaps that’s the wiser move: after all, people are fooled by phishing scams all the time, even senior U.S. officials.

Microsoft reveals ARM-powered Windows 8 prototypes (eyes-on)

Remember how Microsoft unveiled that whole "Windows 8" thing earlier today? It's back for more: here at Computex 2011 in Taipei, prototype ARM-based Windows 8 slates and smartbooks are coming out of the woodwork. Foxconn, Wistron and Quanta all unveiled early hardware for the new OS, with chips from Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and NVIDIA powering their live tiles -- including NVIDIA's upcoming Kal-El, which got both a tablet and a super-slim prototype notebook to call its own. Dell's also got a XPS development station up on stage, which Microsoft used to demo the UI -- it's bulky and ugly as such things are, but it suggests that Dell's also likely to have a portable Windows 8 machine at some point. For its part, Qualcomm is promising a chip that can instantly wake from sleep, and one of the devices showed that USB host support works fine and dandy. Unfortunately, none of these machines will make their way to market, but it's nice to know that the OEMs care enough to show their solidarity here.

SEO + Social Media + Blogging: When Will Big Business Catch Up?

It's no surprise that many businesses are quickly adapting and embracing social media and blogging as lucrative methods of connecting with their audience and generating leads – the impact on universal search and synergies with SEO are well-known. However, based on HubSpot's "2011 State of Inbound Marketing Report," the majority of these are small businesses, whereas larger businesses continue to rely more heavily on traditional marketing efforts. According to HubSpot, small businesses plan to spend 19 percent of budgets on social media vs. only 6 percent in larger businesses. A similar gap is shown for blogging with 10 percent of budgets for small business vs. just 3 percent for large.
hubspot-avg-distribution
It should come as no surprise that small businesses are often the first movers here for a few reasons:
  • Social media and blogs level the playing field vs. larger competitors due to low costs of entry and wide audience reach.
  • Small businesses are often more nimble and able to actively participate and engage with their audience with less branding restrictions.
  • Larger businesses have likely been around much longer, have become comfortable with the performance of offline, traditional SEO, and PPC efforts, and are potentially in the mindset of "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" or "what if someone says something negative about us?"
The types of mindset in the third point above are signs that an organization may not truly understand how online marketing is evolving and are in danger of severely limiting their ability to leverage these channels in the long run. Examining the "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" point of view further, the research from HubSpot reveals that social media and blogs have significantly grown in importance as methods of lead generation leveraging SEO best practices:
hubspot-source-leads
So, if social media and blogging isn't a part of your marketing efforts and it isn't broken yet, it may begin to break in the near future.
Consider now the possibility that someone, somewhere out there on the social media channels may have had a negative experience with your company and decides to "vent" about it. This is a common fear that companies have, which prevents them from engaging in these channels. This is a simple argument to combat. If someone has a negative experience with your company, you should want to hear about it. Not only does it give you the opportunity to address and rectify the situation and turn an angry customer into a satisfied one, it allows your organization to do it publicly and will generate an increased level of trust between you and your audience. This type of exposure and word of mouth can prove to be invaluable. It also shows the close linkage between SEO, universal search, and reputation management.
How successful a business is within specific social media channels will of course vary between B2B and B2C. While all businesses can benefit from social media efforts, according to the data below, B2C organizations tend to see stronger benefits on social sites like Facebook and Twitter, while B2B organizations excel on more professional sites such as LinkedIn. Interestingly, the gap of customer acquisitions between B2B and B2C organizations via company blogs is far smaller and suggests that it is one channel that should be leveraged by all businesses. I've actually seen success across all of these.
hubspot-customer-acq
Thinking beyond lead generation through specific channels, large and small businesses alike must begin to understand that social media and blogging are more about connecting with audiences on a more personal level first and foremost. This is why core SEO principals are so important in the social media sphere – talking the customers' language. SEO, social media efforts, and blogs are not standalone silos. Their benefits and how they can affect and contribute to all areas of marketing, both online and offline, must be taken into consideration and embraced by all the teams within an organization to reap their full potential.
What is your organization's experience with social media? Are you actively engaging and seeing a similar distribution of results as the data shows? Are your SEO and social media teams working closely together? I think if you make those connections, you'll soon find that social is a fruitful area to complement your SEO strategy.

11 Free Microsoft Tools You're Overlooking

Microsoft has a virtual monopoly on desktop operating systems with Windows and on office productivity with its Office suite--as well as a dominant share of the Web browser market with Internet Explorer.

For many, though, Microsoft is the big, evil corporation robbing the defenseless masses, while Google is the Robin Hood of the Web, altruistically delivering free goods and services. However, although you might not realize it, Microsoft also offers many of the same tools and services as Google--and also for free.

Hotmail

Although in many circles Hotmail gets about as much respect as AOL Instant Messenger or MySpace, Microsoft's free Webmail service is capable. Before Microsoft bought it, Hotmail was the first Web-based e-mail service, and one of the first to be free. The free Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector lets you view your Hotmail data from within Outlook, and Hotmail also supports Exchange Active Sync so your Hotmail e-mail, contacts, and calendar can be automatically synced with devices like the iPhone or iPad. Exchange is Microsoft's messaging server used by many businesses for e-mail, but Exchange Active Sync has emerged as a standard used by many devices to sync mail, contact, and calendar information.

Windows Live Essentials

Windows Live MessengerWindows Live Messenger--a component of Windows Live Essentials--can integrate with your Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpace social networks. Up through Windows Vista, the Windows operating system came preloaded with a variety of tools to get you started as soon as you booted up. However, a combination of customer complaints about "bloatware" and an effort by Microsoft to attract more users to Office led to the removal of most of those tools in Windows 7. Microsoft didn't kill the tools, though; it simply moved many of them to the cloud, and began to offer them as a separate download called Windows Live Essentials--a package comprising 7 of the 11 tools discussed in this article. The lineup in Windows Live Essentials 2011 requires Windows 7, Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Server 2008 SP2. If you want them, though, you can download Windows Live Essentials for free and get a whole suite that includes:
  • Windows Live Mail: Whereas Windows Live Hotmail is a Web-based e-mail service, Windows Live Mail is a desktop e-mail client application that lets you add and view multiple e-mail accounts--including Hotmail and Gmail--from one interface. For users who don't want to spend the money to get Outlook, Windows Live Mail performs many of the same functions for free, and is more than adequate as an e-mail client for consumers and for SMBs (small and medium-size businesses). You can manage your e-mail, contacts, calendar, RSS feeds, and newsgroups from within Windows Live Mail.
  • Windows Live Messenger: At its core, Messenger is simply an instant messaging (IM) tool. Like any other IM app, it lets you communicate in real-time with contacts who also happen to use Messenger (or at least some third-party IM tool that connects with a Windows Live Messenger account). Unlike many IM services, though, Windows Live Messenger offers more than a simple list of contacts you can click on to chat with someone. It integrates with Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpace, it delivers MSN news, and it connects with your Hotmail account. Messenger is more of an online communications hub than an IM client. But if the aggregated view is too noisy for you, you can switch to the compact view which is more like a traditional IM client. Plus, its mobile app lets you stay connected on the go from a Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry, Android, or iOS mobile device.
Windows Live MeshWindows Live Mesh keeps files and folders, as well as browser favorites and custom user settings, automatically synced.
  • Windows Live Mesh: It can be daunting to keep information synced among various PCs and devices you use, or to make sure you have access to your data even on the go. Windows Live Mesh helps tie everything together and automatically keeps your data synced and available. You can keep files and folders automatically synced among different Windows or Mac OS X PCs running Live Mesh, or with Microsoft's cloud-based SkyDrive data storage service (see below).
  • Windows Live Writer: Microsoft Writer makes it simpler to write blog posts for a variety of blog platforms including WordPress and SharePoint. Rather than having to learn different blogging conventions, you can just type the post the way you want, and easily add photos, videos, or Bing maps to enrich your post with interactive content.
Photo GalleryPhoto Gallery organizes all of your photos and gives you the tools to quickly find and easily edit them.
  • Photo Gallery: For many, the PC has replaced the bookshelf photo album as the primary repository for photos. Windows Live Photo Gallery gives you the tools to import photos and videos quickly from your camera or smartphone and keep them organized on your PC. Its advanced editing tools let you fuse pictures together or combine elements from different photos to make the best possible picture. It also includes built-in search options that let you find photos based on when they were taken, or where, or to use facial recognition technology to find all photos of a given person.
  • Windows Live Movie Maker: With HD video being virtually a default feature of smartphones, laptops, and tablets these days, everyone is an amateur director or producer. Edit and polish that lengthy, boring footage of your daughter's fifth-grade play on Movie Maker before sending it to friends or family, publishing it online, or posting it on social networking sites like Facebook. Give it a title and intro, cut out parts you don't want, add some background music, and more. Editing and producing a movie is simple with Movie Maker.
  • Windows Live Family Safety: Family Safety 2011 enhances the parental controls already built into Windows and makes it even easier for parents to protect children from the darker side of the Web and to monitor or limit Internet activity. Parents can even limit e-mail and IM communications to approved contacts, and can log in to view activity reports from their own PC rather than checking in on each separate PC.

Windows Live SkyDrive

Everything seems to revolve around the cloud these days. In other words, we find ourselves using products and services that exist on the Internet rather than locally on our PCs. But if you happen to be without Internet access or if the service goes down, that can be a problem.
Luckily, services such as Windows Live SkyDrive are great for backing up data to the Internet, or for storing files and folders that you want to access from just about anywhere. As mentioned earlier, you can use Windows Live Mesh to sync data automatically from a local folder to SkyDrive cloud storage, where you can make sure it is backed up and available.
Windows Live MovieMaker turns anyone into a movie director or producer, and helps you polish those home movies.Windows Live MovieMaker turns anyone into a movie director or producer, and helps you polish those home movies. The 25GB of storage provided by SkyDrive is sufficient for most SMBs to back up critical data. (Data synced using Windows Live Mesh is limited to a separate 5GB space.) Plus, a Silverlight tool lets you drag and drop files and folders from any browser that supports Silverlight, Microsoft's framework for delivering interactive Web content.

Office Web Apps

Along with SkyDrive, Microsoft also provides free, Web-based versions of the most popular Microsoft Office applications. Office Web Apps let you create, view, and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote files directly from the Web even if Microsoft Office isn't installed on your PC. Office Web Apps lack the complete inventory of bells and whistles found in the full Microsoft Office suite, but they are more than adequate for most users, and you can't beat the price. The best part is that the files created in Office Web Apps are in the same format as their desktop Office counterparts, so compatibility is not an issue, and the files can be shared with peers for collaborative editing online.
Windows Live SkyDrive stores your files and folders on the Web so you can access them from virtually anywhere.Windows Live SkyDrive stores your files and folders on the Web so you can access them from virtually anywhere. But organizations that want more robust tools, or the full Microsoft Office experience, should look for the upcoming launch of Office 365--Microsoft's replacement for Business Professional Online Services. Starting at only $6 per user per month, Office 365 will provide Exchange e-mail, Lync instant messaging, SharePoint collaboration, and the Office Web Apps productivity suite.

Security Essentials

Security software is unfortunately a requirement for Windows PCs. There is no shortage of attackers and malware developers targeting PC users with viruses, worms, phishing attacks, and other insidious things. Windows has a built-in firewall to keep unauthorized traffic and users out of your PC, and Windows Defender to identify and block spyware and drive-by downloads. But for more comprehensive antimalware protection, get the free Microsoft Security Essentials software. Security Essentials is simple and does what it needs to do with a minimum of user intervention or annoyance.
If you're unfamiliar with these free tools from Microsoft, check them out. The price is right, so certainly you should explore whether they can meet your needs before you spend money buying third-party software that does the same thing. Whether to use, instead, other free tools and services such as those offered by Google: That is largely a matter of personal preference. But the Microsoft tools tend to work together and integrate well, so you may find that if you are using one Microsoft tool, it is better to leverage the convenience of using the others as well.
Whether you are new to these tools, or have been using them for some time, I'd be interested to know in the comments, or by e-mail, what your experience has been like and whether or not you would recommend these tools to others.

CODD’S RULES

CODD’S RULES

0)      Single Foundation Rule :
RDBMS must manage every aspect within itself. Without using an external language. Processing should not be done with external storage.

– Define :
Each RDBMS has it own file system not use the operating system file. Oracle has its own file system. It initializes in memory at the time of start up & storage is also in oracle file system & can’t access by explorer (windows explorer). It can’t take any type of help with other file system.

1)      Information Rule :
Information can be represented in one and only way that is “TABLES”.

– Define :
RDBMS store its information in the form of table even the data about data is also store in table form.

2)      Guaranteed Access :
Access to tables follow the sequence of table name, tupuole, attributes. Every step of data guarantee has been identified access to your work area involves qualifying the user “name” and “passwords”.

–  Define:
Oracle has the account of user and its password. Without it user can’t access it. It can create by a DBA against the request of user.

3)      System able Treatment of Null :
RDBMS should be able to operate with “null value”. Operations with null should be performing by a single command.

– Define:
‘Null’ means nothing. Oracle has the facility to handle the null value. If we assign any field ‘not null’ we must enter the record in this key like the primary key of record. We can insert the ‘0’ value easily on that place where the value is ‘null’

4)      Active On-line Catalog :
The RDBMS should maintain data dictionary tables (catalog).
– Define:
All the data in any table but that information is in summary form present in ‘catalog’ access by ‘DBA’. The another name of catalog is ‘active online catalog’. Catalog is the main characteristics of RDBMS. Catalog has the data about data called “META DATA”. Like ‘fat’ on disk have the data about data on disk.
5)      Comprehensive Data Sub-Language:
                          (DSL)  RDBMS should have transactional.
                            (DDL) Data definition language.
                          (DML) Data manipulation language
                            (DCL) Data control language)

– Define:
                 Oracle has some sub-languages like.
       DDL (data definition language)
                    Define table
      DML (data manipulation language)
                    Data manipulation
     DCL  (data control language)
                   Create user, create table etc.
    DRL  (data retrial language)
                    Retrieve data with commands

6)      View Updating Rule :
Each distinct row of a view must correspond to a distinct and uniquely identifiable row of the base table.

– Define:
DBA gives the right to access any table. DBA design a view in which user access only those records in which BDA gives the rights. if we changing in view already effect in table. If we changing in table take already in view. User rights gives by DBA.

7)      High Level Global Insert,Detete & update :
By single command insertions, deletions and replacements should be possible.

– Define:
In oracle insertion, Deletion, updating must be held on one command. Means one command for insertion, one for deletion and one for updating.

8)      Physical Data Independence :
Recording on the data base should be left to the desecration of the type of system used.

– Define:
In oracle if we store any application there is no effect on operating system.

9)      Logical Data Independence :
Should not be recompiled. Programming efforts should not be wasted as to change logic. Depending on the storage style.

– Define:
In oracle the compilation result store in the buffer. If the other user write the some command than compiler give the result of if which they already store in the buffer. But there is a limited data store in the buffer.

10)  Integrity Independence:
Data available should pose no limitations in terms of integration.

– Define:
Integrity Independence RDBMS software has no limitation of linking data. Only in the case of hardware capacity. If the hardware capacity is full then we can’t open other table.

11)  Distribution Independence:
Should look like a centralized system to the user.

– Define:
According to this rule user can’t see the complexity of back end environment. They work on simple front-end environment.

12)  Non-Sub Version Rule :
In case of help rendered by some other languages rules governing RDBMS should not be implemented.

– Define:
In oracle there is no version clash. We run the oracle 5 commands in oracle 6.
